Butterfly Needle vs Straight Needle: Which to Use and When
Both a butterfly needle and a straight needle are standard for blood collection, but they suit different veins. A butterfly (winged) set has flexible tubing and a shallow insertion angle, giving excellent control on small, fragile, rolling, or hand and wrist veins — ideal for pediatric and geriatric patients.
A straight multi-sample needle goes directly into the vein for faster, more economical draws on large, prominent antecubital veins in cooperative adults. Rule of thumb: choose a butterfly needle for difficult veins and comfort, and a straight needle for fast routine draws.
